As part of my current series of older architecture, I thought it would be great to include art of a building that people in Portland are familiar with. And the first thing that came to my mind was the Pittock Mansion. It fit comfortably into the series, especially given that there are two other Victorian/ Art Nouveau inspired mansions, The Haunted Mansion and Flavel House. One gorgeous day in May, I drove up from North Pole in the Pearl and took photos of the Pittock Mansion to create the art. I had been there once, but didn’t really get the chance to walk around it. Much like Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, I personally liked the back of the mansion more than the front. I took several photos and chose my favorite one. I always prefer using my own photos as it feels more personal, meaningful, and I do not feel like I’m copying someone else.
