On my 32nd birthday in 2023, I went to Astoria with my girlfriend, Monica. Astoria is one of my favorite towns in Oregon outside of Portland. I had been to Astoria once, but I had never been to the Flavel House. It was on that trip that I learned that The Goonies was filmed in Astoria. As known as that film is, I ironically hadn’t seen it. The Flavel House is the museum in The Goonies where one of the fathers works as a curator. Despite not seeing the film, I fell in love with the house. It really reminded me of The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland, since much like the original concept for the Haunted Mansion, a Sea Captain built this house in the late 1800’s. The house is also Haunted and has a spiral staircase. My birthday is in October, which made our tour of the house extra special, as they had a Halloween themed scavenger hunt, which was just as fun for adults as it was for kids. I realized I still had a photo of the Flavel House from where I went and decided to add it into my architecture series.
