“Mother’s Day” was made as a Mother’s Day present from Max’s to his mother, author Claire LaZebnik. It is a stencil painting of Max’s immediate family using dabs of different watercolors: blue, purple, green, yellow, orange, and red. The painting is from a photo of the family on a trip to Sedona, Arizona. In the painting, the “darks” in the stencils are dabs of watercolors as stated above while the lights blend into the white canvas. Max was inspired by Georges Seurat’s use of dots to create his “dabs” of watercolors in the artwork.
Max had an interesting process creating this. Using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, Max cropped and “stencilized” the family. He then drew the stencils using a pencil on canvas. He then dabbed the penciled parts of the stencil with different watercolors.
