Laura, a colleage and friend of Max’s, requested a second painting of her and her husband, Mark. Max had done “Laura and Mark” for them the previous month. While Max used an abstract technique for the previous painting, he decided to make this in the style of Kehinde Wiley thinking Laura would like it. This time, it included the couples’ dogs, entitled, “Mark, Laura, and their Dogs.” After Max initially painted the portrait, he got comments that it looked “harsh.” The painted was initially painted with the faces in pencil and the clothing in gouache. Max agreed it could be improed. The original background had solid rainbow stripes. He then added a colored blue shadow to the inner skin and blended the rainbow colors in together to make it look less “harsh.”
