Max really wanted to do a close-to-photorealistic graphite self-portrait. Initially, he thought of using all sorts of mixed media. Unlike previous self-portraits, Max used the “grid” method for drawing, Max started drawing pencil and loved the look of his face in pencil. Instead of coloring or shading the current portrait in graphite, he decided to fill the background with other things that were “on his mind.” Max decided to make the portrait themed to “what is on his mind.” He then came up with the name, “Up Close and Personal” for the new portrait. His family’s dog, Harvey had just passed away which Max was really saddened about. A full drawing of Harvey was included in the bottom right of the drawing to honor him. Max also felt angry about something else and included an angry man in the bottom left of the piece.
