“The Struggle for Self-Acceptance” is Max’s first self-portrait of 2019. Max’s major New Year’s resolution for 2019 is to practice “self-acceptance.” While reading this self help book, The Radical Acceptance by Tara Brach, Max thought of creating a piece with the theme of practicing inner kindness and positivity. While thinking of the word “love,” he thought of bright, rainbow colors against a white sheet. However, if it reflected accepting oneself, it had to be a self-portrait. Max also wanted the piece to look “quiet” and “calm.” To evoke this, he created self portrait of himself against a white background in 4 different colors, happily drinking a trippy looking drink filled with shapes. He is surrounded by aspects of nature that are considered “peaceful” and “romantic” including: a bee, a saguaro cactus, a rose, lovebird, and the moon.
