“Spacing Out” is Max’s first foray into collage-making. It resembles Max when he is distracted or “spaced out.” The vintage space theme of the collage was inspired by the music video for Lana Del Rey’s “Love,” and a series of mind-melting collages by Eugenia Loli. The space background with a giant nebula in its center was originally painted as the background. A small drawing of Max in a god-like pose was drawn to make him look like he was “spacing out” while juggling five collaged planets. The drawing of Max’s stands on a cut-out of the sun. Other planets and moons are seen collaged in the drawing alongside athletes and the Astro Orbiter from Disneyland’s Tomorrowland. When the collaging was finished, the art was given a cover of coffee mixed with brown paint to make it look like it was created in the ’60’s. The coffee and paint mix was also used with some black paint to create a “vignette” to further amplify the vintage effect. Afterward, Max splattered white paint from a brush to create stars all over the art. Once the stars were finished, the paint was sprayed with hairspray, a photo was taken, and a retro grain effect was added through Photoshop. Max plans to continue to make more collages, making each collage better as he goes.
