“United Shades of Kate” is based off a 4th of July themed photoshoot with supermodel Kate Upton from GQ Magazine. In the photo, Kate is wearing an American flag themed bikini licking a red, white, and blue popsicle. As this piece was made in July, the 4th of July bikini photo was well suited for this piece. For a long time, Max wanted to include her for art, as she is arguably one of the best millennial models with some of the best poses to draw. The title of the piece is a pun on the CNN Documentary, “United Shades of America,” because of the different colors and the overarching patriotic theme.
